Winter Celebration Week

We had a lot of fun, singing and dancing this week!  A big thank you to Mrs. Buonomo and Mrs. Fraser for teaching the learners such an amazing variety of songs and dances for our special winter celebration week.  The children loved sharing their songs with you.  They also really enjoyed watching the other classes perform.  It created such an awesome feeling of community for our learners this week to share their performances with each other.

The past couple of days have gone by so very quickly.  Some learning highlights for our class, we enjoyed getting together with our grade 3 buddies and continuing our work to become stronger, more confident readers.  We have enjoyed reading a variety of stories together.  One of the stories we read this week was the classic fairy tale of the Gingerbread  Boy.  The learners enjoyed choral reading this story together as a class.  We also read The Gingerbread Teacher.   We really enjoyed comparing how both stories were alike, and contrasting how they were also different.  The learners also completed a guided drawing of the Gingerbread Teacher.

Please enjoy some pictures of our learning.

Just a heads up, I am also sending home the student's indoor shoes today.  They are all growing so much over the past few months. If you can kindly take a quick peak at them over break and make sure their shoes still fit that would be great.  Please return their indoor shoes to school on January 8th.

Thank you all so very much for your help and support.  I have enjoyed watching all the children grow and learn so much over the past few months.  I look forward to having more learning adventures with all the students in 2018.

Wishing you and your family a joyful holiday season and a very happy New Year.  See you in 2018!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai

Counting by 2's and Holiday Fun

Hello!  We have had a very busy few days.  Here are some learning highlights you may want to talk to your children about ...

We have been practicing lots, getting ready for our little performance next week.

We continue to work on our literacy centers, the students are becoming such great little readers.  Thank you so much for your help and support with our Home Reading Program.  A big thank you as well to everyone for returning your library book to school on Friday.

Our numeracy skills are also really developing.  The students and I have been exploring a math program on our smartboard, it has been a fun and engaging way to review important math facts.  We have also been exploring skip counting by 2's.  I love that they are so excited and engaged in our math activities. In addition, they have become such a great community of learners.  I was so impressed last week with how they are so supportive of each other.  They are a great group of kids, I feel really lucky and blessed to be their teacher.  Please enjoy some pictures of our  learning:

The students were VERY excited to hear about Winter Celebration Week!

Invitations to our Winter Celebration

We had an awesome day today!  The learners all enjoyed going to the library this morning and signing out some new books to read.  The learners are all becoming very engaged readers.  It's  so exciting to see their love of reading growing every day :)

We had the very best compliment today from Mrs. Brock in the library.  Mrs. Brock had to step out of the library for a min, and our grade one learners on their own, gently laid out all of the library cards and quietly waited for her while nicely reading their books in the library.  Mrs. Brock was so surprised when she came back, and discovered all of our learners had laid out all of our supplies for the library and were quietly engaged with their books while waiting to sign out their new library books.  Mrs. Brock could "not believe how responsible our grade one was were today in the library." She even said the grade 4 students often can not do these things on their own.  Way to go grade one students!!!  I was so proud of them for their good choices :)

Please enjoy reading a new library book with your child tonight.  As winter break is approaching, library will be closed next week.  So we are  asking  all  the students to return the library books to school by Friday Nov 15.

Today,  we looked over some professional invitations on our learning  tv.   We discovered that invitations all include neat printing and excellent information.  The invitations we enjoyed looking at were all vey colorful and creative.  These invitations inspired us to create some special invitations for our families.  The learners were all very engaged in designing and creating some personal invitations for our Winter Celebration. In your child's backpack tonight you will see their awesome creations.  They are very proud of their writing and their illustrations as well.  I hope you will be able to join us for our celebration of learning next week.

Please enjoy some pictures from our learning today:

Have a great night!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai

Skip Counting by 5's

Happy Monday!  We had a busy day in the classroom.  Here are some learning highlights you might want to review at home with your children.

We worked in our literacy centers this morning.  We are working on reading the Fry's First 100 Words.  We also reviewed the letter M sound this morning. The learners practiced printing it accurately in our printing books.

This afternoon, our math lesson was focused on skip counting. We reviewed skip counting by 10's to 100.  We also practiced skip counting by 5's to 100.We are learning some fabulous skip counting songs to help us remember.  The learners have also been creating some visuals to help us learn our skip counting.  Please enjoy some pictures of our learning.

At home, please ask your child to:

  • skip count by 10's to 100
  • skip count by 5's to 100
Next step, please ask your child to skip count by 2's.

Thank you for your help and support!

Warm Regards,

Makerspace

Yesterday morning we got together with our grade 3 buddies.  We spent some time together exploring our new Makerspace area.

"Maker spaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering."

Please enjoy some photos of our learning.

Have a great weekend!
