Happy Wednesday!

Whew..what a busy week we have had so far! We have been working very hard on practicing for our assembly.  The leaners are looking forward to sharing a power point project on the needs of plants and a cute flower song for you.  All families are welcome to join us for this celebration of learning.  The assembly will start at 8:30a.m.

We also had a lockdown drill in our school this morning.  Our school is committed to the safety of all of our leaners.  So just as we practice what to do during a fire drill, we also need to practice what to do for a lockdown.  The learners all did wonderful job!  I was very impressed, they all knew where our meeting place was in the classroom and everyone went there quickly and quietly.  Great work grade one students!

We have been learning all about community helpers and different types of communities.  We have been learning about urban, suburban, and rural communities.

  • An urban community, is a city with lots of  tall buildings and lots of people. Often very crowded and loud.
  • A rural community, is far away from a urban area.  There are not many people or buildings.
  • A suburban area, is where we live.  Often called the suburbs.

The learners have all been busy researching these different types of communities over the past few weeks. This week the learners were given the opportunity to create a community of their choice.  Students were paired together with a team, based on the type of community they were interested in creating.  The learners were then asked to create a map of their community together as a team.  On their map, the learners were asked to label the compose rose (N, E, S, W).  They were also expected to create a legend to go with their map.  Once the maps were complete, the learners used plasticine to create a 3D model of their map.  The learners included a variety of 3D shapes in their communities. Please enjoy some pictures of our learning.

Have a great night!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai
