What a wonderful week we have had so far! Full of planting, geography, and reading outside.
We are very excited, butterflies will be arriving in our classroom soon. We are excited to learn more about butterflies. So as a class we have done some research together on the Pebble Go website, to gather some more information. We practiced looking for important words only, and writing down a few short notes. As a class, we took those point form notes and created simple sentences about our butterfly research.
The learners also selected an animal of their choice, and they too have begun researching this animal on the iPads in the classroom. The learners have been exploring the Pebble Go website, as one of the literacy centers and have also been writing down important words about their animal. The learners are now in the process of taking their research and creating simple sentences about their animals. Once their research is complete, the learners will all have an opportunity to share their work with their classmates.
We have also started doing some planting in our classroom. We started with some bean seeds, paper towels and ziploc bags. First we added the seed and wet paper towel into the ziploc bag. We sealed the plastic bags shut and placed them near a window. The learners have been checking our growing beans in a bag each day to see how they were changing. After about 5 days we noticed that the seeds were starting to germinate! The learners were thrilled to see a little shoot poking out from the seed. After a few more days we could see the roots starting to grow. It has been so fun watching the children's observations each day as they observe the changes in their seed. We have now planted the seeds in soil, and have been drawing and writing about our observations in our plant journals.
The learners are so keen to learn about planting. We have also been learning some cute planting songs about the need of plants, and look forward to sharing that with you next week at the assembly.
In Social Studies, we have been busy reviewing the continents and having lots of fun exploring Google Earth with Ms. Petrie's class. Ms. Petrie is a Google Earth expert, and has been teaching us all about it. Together, we have been practicing finding Canada on google map. We have discovered that if we can identify the North America on the map, and then the Hudson Bay , we are able to find Canada. We are then able to locate Alberta, the Rocky Mountains and Calgary. We love dropping into the map to explore Calgary in more detail. The learners have been reviewing finding the Calgary airport on the map. They also know, that if they can identify Nose Hill Park, then Evanston is north of this important landmark. The learners also love doing a virtual travel of their home community of Evanston. The learners are really becoming geography experts now too.
If you have time, you may want to check out Google Earth at home with your child. Ask your child to show you these places on the map:
- North America
- Canada
- Hudson Bay
- Rocky Mountains
- Calgary
- Nose Hill Park
- Calgary Airport
- Bow River
Have a great night!
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai
