Happy Wednesday!

Whew..what a busy week we have had so far! We have been working very hard on practicing for our assembly.  The leaners are looking forward to sharing a power point project on the needs of plants and a cute flower song for you.  All families are welcome to join us for this celebration of learning.  The assembly will start at 8:30a.m.

We also had a lockdown drill in our school this morning.  Our school is committed to the safety of all of our leaners.  So just as we practice what to do during a fire drill, we also need to practice what to do for a lockdown.  The learners all did wonderful job!  I was very impressed, they all knew where our meeting place was in the classroom and everyone went there quickly and quietly.  Great work grade one students!

We have been learning all about community helpers and different types of communities.  We have been learning about urban, suburban, and rural communities.

  • An urban community, is a city with lots of  tall buildings and lots of people. Often very crowded and loud.
  • A rural community, is far away from a urban area.  There are not many people or buildings.
  • A suburban area, is where we live.  Often called the suburbs.

The learners have all been busy researching these different types of communities over the past few weeks. This week the learners were given the opportunity to create a community of their choice.  Students were paired together with a team, based on the type of community they were interested in creating.  The learners were then asked to create a map of their community together as a team.  On their map, the learners were asked to label the compose rose (N, E, S, W).  They were also expected to create a legend to go with their map.  Once the maps were complete, the learners used plasticine to create a 3D model of their map.  The learners included a variety of 3D shapes in their communities. Please enjoy some pictures of our learning.

Have a great night!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai

Wonderful Wednesday

What a wonderful week we have had so far! Full of planting, geography, and reading outside.

We are very excited, butterflies will be arriving in our classroom soon.  We are excited to learn more about butterflies.  So as a class we have done some research together on the Pebble Go website, to gather some more information.  We practiced looking for important words only, and writing down a few short notes.  As a class, we took those point form notes and created simple sentences about our butterfly research.

The learners also selected an animal of their choice, and they too have begun researching this animal on the iPads in the classroom.  The learners have been exploring the Pebble Go website, as one of the literacy centers and have also been writing down important words about their animal.  The learners are now in the process of taking their research and creating simple sentences about their animals.  Once their research is complete, the learners will all have an opportunity to share their work with their classmates.

We have also started doing some planting in our classroom.  We started with some bean seeds, paper towels and ziploc bags.  First we added the seed and wet paper towel into the ziploc bag.  We sealed the plastic bags shut and placed them near a window.  The learners have been checking our growing  beans in a bag each day to see how they were changing.  After about 5 days we noticed that the seeds were starting to germinate!  The learners were thrilled to see a little shoot poking out from the seed.  After a few more days we could see the roots starting to grow.  It has been so fun watching the children's observations each day as they observe the changes in their seed.  We have now planted the seeds in soil, and have been drawing and writing about our observations in our plant journals.

The learners are so keen to learn about planting.  We have also been learning some cute planting songs about the need of plants, and look forward to sharing that with you next week at the assembly.

In Social Studies, we have been busy reviewing the continents and having lots of fun exploring Google Earth with Ms. Petrie's class.  Ms.  Petrie is a Google Earth expert, and has been teaching us all about it.  Together, we have been practicing finding Canada on google map.  We have discovered that if we can identify the North America on the map, and then the Hudson Bay , we are able to find Canada.  We are then able to locate Alberta, the Rocky Mountains and Calgary.  We love dropping into the map to explore Calgary in more detail.  The learners have been reviewing finding the Calgary airport on the map.  They also know, that if they can identify Nose Hill Park, then Evanston is north of this important landmark.  The learners also love doing a virtual travel of their home community of  Evanston.  The learners are really becoming geography experts now too.

If you have time, you may want to check out Google Earth at home with your child.  Ask your child to show you these places on the map:
  • North America
  • Canada
  • Hudson Bay
  • Rocky Mountains
  • Calgary
  • Nose Hill Park
  • Calgary Airport
  • Bow River
Have a great night!

Warm  Regards,
Mrs. Lai

Friendly Friday

I can't remember a year where I have appreciated the warm spring weather so much!  It feels like winter lasted FOREVER but it is so nice to get outside with the students and enjoy some warmer weather at recess.   As the weather is finally starting to warm up, we will be starting to explore our school yard for signs of spring.  In addition, we will also be doing some plant sketches and observations outside.   If you can please remember to pack a hat for your child to wear outside that would be very helpful.  Thank you !

On Friday, we were excited to start our day with a school assembly, where the kindergarten and grade four students put on a fantastic showcase of their learning.  It was also a special assembly, as we were a able to give an official thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers.  Thank you so much to all of our volunteer helpers!!!  We are so very lucky to have your assistance in the classroom and on field trips.

Following our assembly, we got together with our grade 3 buddies and worked on some fun spring math together as well as reading.  After snack time, and recess break, the learners were very focused on writing their Letters Home.  The learners also enjoyed a short center time before we packed up to go home.  It was a very busy morning of learning.

Hope you all had a great weekend!

Warm Regards,
Mrs. Lai
